What is cross-ice hockey?

Instead of one big game on the whole sheet, the rink is split across its width into thirds. Two games run at the same time on the end mini-rinks, each sized just right for young players, and the middle third is the change zone where the next shift waits its turn.

Why parents (and kids) love it

More puck, more fun

A smaller space means the puck is always nearby. Kids touch it, pass it and shoot it far more than on a full sheet.

More decisions

Tight spaces force quick thinking: skate, pass or shoot? That's how hockey sense grows.

Everyone is involved

No standing around waiting for the play to come back. Every player is in the action, every shift.

Right-sized for kids

A full rink is built for adults. Cross-ice fits young players, just like smaller fields in youth soccer.

More shots on goal

Goalies see lots of shots and skaters get lots of chances to score. Big celebrations all weekend!

Recommended by the pros

USA Hockey, Hockey Canada and the IIHF all use small-area games for youth development.

Parent questions

Is cross-ice "real" hockey?

Absolutely. Same skates, same sticks, same goals for your player to chase. The ice is just sized for them. Many top NHL players grew up playing small-area games.

My child is new to games. Is that OK?

Yes! Cross-ice is the most welcoming way to play. We group players so games are balanced and fun for everyone.

Do they keep score?

The focus is on fun and development. Kids will celebrate every goal, but the big win is the smiles.

Simple, safe and designed for fun. Final rules are shared with coaches before the event.

  • U11 only: players aged 10 and under.
  • Cross-ice format: small-sided games on mini-rinks across the ice.
  • Shift buzzer: everyone changes on the buzzer so every kid gets equal ice time.
  • No body checking. Safety first, always.
  • No slapshots and no offside or icing in cross-ice games.
  • Full equipment required: certified helmet with full cage, neck guard, mouthguard, gloves, elbow and shin pads, hockey pants and skates.
